“On Building Books”

Interior Layout Design

For my first interior spread, I took a lot of inspiration from my favourite book called A Book On Books by Victionary. I had it very close by during the creation of my designs but, I did not want to go too bold as it is a more professional and informative tone rather than a novel or fiction book of sorts. I used a grayscale to have it appear more sleek and well balanced to be able to pop with the black and white space. I tried to something a little more fun or bold than a simple and straightforward essay text as it is about book design itself and thought it would entice the reader or showcase more about book design while reading even if it was simple. I also did try to play around with the idea of different weights and styles of texts to show difference without using colons to divide them.

I used Plantin MT Pro as my serif font as I had used Minion Pro before and wanted something different, and Trade Gothic Next as my sans serif font. When putting all the text together I thought back to any essay I had ever read, or any more professional texts and I had no recollection of seeing any that had dots over their letters that look like accents (which is why I did not choose Albertan Pro), the type just felt a little distracting to me. Gill Sans also felt a little bit too flat for a professional text, so the choice fell between Futura and Trade Gothic Next and in this case I felt it better represented my design choices.
